Trilinga Desam or Trilinga Kshetras or Trilinga Temples

The Etymology of Telugu is thought to have been derived from trilinga as in Trilinga Desa, "the country of the three lingas" and as per the Mythology, The Lord Shiva has been descended as Shivalingam on three sacred mountains. The three sacred mountains (Trilinga Temples) are:
Trilinga Desam or Trilinga Kshetras or Trilinga Temples

 


The three(3) holy mountains are marked the boundaries of the Telugu country. It also thought to be believed that the word Telangana derived from Telingana,Telinga, Trilinga.

In Andhra Kaumudi a Telugu grammar book was mentioned that Andhra Vishnu having built an immense wall, connecting Sri Sailam, Bhimeswaram and Kaleswaram with the Mahendra hills.

And it is said that in the three hills/gates were the three eyed Ishwara the supreme Lord Shiva, was found bearing the trident in his hand and was addressed by a group of divinities resided in the form of three Shivalingams are known as Trilinga Temples or Trilinga Kshetras or Trilinga Desam.

The legend says that Andhra Vishnu was assisted by the divine angels and fought with Nishambhu (the great giant) for thirteen yugas killed him in battle and took up his residence on the banks of river Godavari along with the sages (saints).
